What Can Porcelain Veneers Do?

Veneers are a powerful, versatile cosmetic dentistry treatment. They can be used to correct many common complaints about the appearance of your smile, including teeth that are:

  • Discolored
  • Chipped
  • Worn
  • Small
  • Poorly shaped
  • Gapped
  • Crooked

Not only can porcelain veneers correct all these problems, they can do it all at once–it only takes one procedure to get all these concerns fixed. And they are often better than other options for correcting these complaints.

Although discolored teeth are often treated with teeth whitening, that doesn’t always work. But if teeth whitening can’t whiten teeth, porcelain veneers can often cover the discoloration. Whitening is limited by the color of your tooth enamel and dentin, but dental veneers can be as white as you want.

Teeth that are chipped, worn, small, or poorly shaped are often treated with dental bonding. Although bonding is a fine approach to reshaping teeth, porcelain veneers are more attractive and more durable.

Gapped and crooked teeth can be treated with orthodontics like Invisalign. However, this can take months. But with veneers, you can get your tooth gaps and crooked teeth reshaped in one month or less!

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

How can porcelain veneers achieve all these cosmetic effects so well and so quickly? They are thin facades of advanced ceramic that are bonded to the visible surfaces of your teeth. This has the effect of giving your teeth entirely new visible surfaces. That way, your teeth can be reshaped and any discoloration is covered.

When teeth are reshaped, they can be widened to close gaps or reoriented so they’re straighter. They can be lengthened or repaired.

What Is the Porcelain Veneer Procedure Like?

If you are getting porcelain veneers, we will start by performing a dental exam on your teeth. We want to make sure they’re healthy enough for dental veneers. If they’re not, or if they need more structural support, we might recommend porcelain crowns instead, as these can achieve the same results but provide more protection for teeth.

Then we will talk to you about your treatment goals and design your new smile. Once we have agreed on what your new smile is going to look like, we’ll prepare your teeth to receive porcelain veneers. This involves removing a small amount of tooth enamel so the veneers can fit smoothly against your teeth. We’ll take impressions of your teeth and send these along with your smile design to the lab where your veneers are going to be custom-crafted. You’ll be given temporary veneers to wear in the meantime.

When your veneers arrive, we will check them for color, fit, and design. Then we’ll bond them to your natural teeth.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

We understand that the name “porcelain veneers” might lead you to think that these are fragile restorations, but that’s not the case. The porcelain used in these veneers is actually a very advanced ceramic. It can be highly attractive, but may be as strong as titanium. Modern veneers are very durable and can last a long time.

These veneers are resistant to chipping, cracking, and staining. In fact, studies show that over 95% of porcelain veneers last ten years or more, and about 85% last up to 20 years. With proper care of your veneers, you’re likely to see great results that can last that long or longer.
