Root Canal Therapy
IN Carmel Mountain

If you have a painful, infected, or abscessed tooth, root canal therapy can help save your natural tooth and relieve discomfort. At Oasis Dental Arts, Dr. Ramin Goshtasbi provides root canal therapy in Carmel Mountain for patients with tooth infections, lingering sensitivity, swelling, or severe dental pain.

A modern root canal removes infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and seals the space, and often restores the tooth with a dental crown. The goal is to stop the infection, reduce pain, and help you keep your natural tooth for years.

Call (858) 271-1010 or contact Oasis Dental Arts online to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms of an Infected Tooth

Common symptoms of an infected or abscessed tooth include:

  • Lingering sensitivity to heat, cold, or pressure
  • Severe tooth pain that affects sleep or daily activities
  • Swelling near the tooth or gums
  • Chronic bad breath or a foul taste
  • Fever or flu-like symptoms
  • Warmth around one tooth
  • A gum pimple that may drain pus
  • A tooth that turns gray, brown, or dark

Some infected teeth cause little or no pain at first, so swelling, discoloration, or a draining gum bump should still be checked by a dentist.

Is an Infected Tooth a Dental Emergency?

An infected tooth can become a dental emergency, especially if pain, swelling, fever, or drainage is present. Dental infections should not be ignored because they can spread beyond the tooth.

For most infected teeth, a dentist is the best first call because the goal is to treat the infection and save the tooth when possible. Call Oasis Dental Arts at (858) 271-1010 for guidance and appointment availability.

Go to the emergency room if you have facial swelling, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, high fever, confusion, or symptoms that feel life-threatening.

How Root Canal Therapy Works

Root canal therapy treats infection inside the tooth. During treatment, Dr. Goshtasbi removes infected pulp, cleans the inner tooth, seals the space, and restores the tooth so it can function again.

1

Step 1: Numbing the Tooth

Your tooth and surrounding area are numbed before treatment starts.

2

Step 2: Removing the Infection

The infected pulp is removed from inside the tooth.

3

Step 3: Cleaning and Sealing the Tooth

The root canals are cleaned, shaped, and filled with a stable material.

4

Step 4: Restoring the Tooth

Many root canal-treated teeth need a dental crown for long-term strength and protection.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

Modern root canal therapy is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. The tooth is numbed during treatment, and many patients feel better after the infected tissue is removed. Some soreness is normal after the procedure, but it usually improves within a few days.

Should I Save a Tooth or Replace It?

When possible, saving your natural tooth is often preferred. Root canal therapy may be recommended if the tooth has enough healthy structure to support a filling or crown.

Treatment Option Best For Main Benefit
Root Canal Therapy An infected tooth that still has enough healthy structure to restore Helps save your natural tooth and relieve infection-related pain
Dental Implant A tooth that is too cracked, damaged, or unstable to save Replaces the missing tooth with a long-lasting restoration
Tooth Extraction A tooth that cannot be repaired or safely restored Removes the source of infection when saving the tooth is not possible

If the tooth is cracked, severely damaged, or cannot be restored, extraction and replacement with a dental implant may be a better option. Dr. Goshtasbi can evaluate the tooth and explain which treatment gives you the best long-term outcome.

I got my first cleaning and X-rays here this year. Dr.G uses a laser that not all dentists have to discover pre-cavities. I ended up getting 5 cavities filled. I also got to see photos of the cavities and I was glad the laser discovered about 2 of them because they could have ended up as root canals. Dr. G’s personality helps me feel calm as I can be anxious. Dr. G is highly skilled in performing dental procedures. The staff, including Jen, Ciara, and Mish (I’m not sure about the spelling of their names), make the experience feel personalized, light-hearted, and as close to enjoyable as a trip to the dentist can be.

My family and I have been going to Dr. G for about 15 years. We trust him because he does not do anything that is unnecessary when it comes to treatment. He really listens to his patients and was there for us during dental emergencies. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

I had Veneers and some crowns done by Dr. G at OAISIS DENTAL ARTS and I’m very with the results. It’s been two years now and have no problems with it. Dr. G is a perfectionist, he takes his time to make sure everything fits the way it should be.

Root Canal Therapy FAQs

How do I know if I need a root canal?

You may need a root canal if you have lingering tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, a gum pimple, or a darkened tooth. A dental exam and X-rays can confirm whether the tooth pulp is infected.

Can a root canal save an infected tooth?

Yes, root canal therapy can often save an infected tooth by removing the infected pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it against future infection.

Is a root canal better than pulling the tooth?

A root canal is often better when the natural tooth can still be restored. Pulling the tooth may be needed if the tooth is cracked, unstable, or too damaged to support a crown.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

A tooth treated with root canal therapy can last for many years with proper restoration, daily care, and regular dental visits.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Many back teeth need a crown after root canal therapy because they handle strong chewing forces. A crown helps protect the treated tooth from cracking.

What happens if I ignore an infected tooth?

Ignoring an infected tooth can lead to worsening pain, swelling, bone loss, and spread of infection. Prompt dental care gives you a better chance of saving the tooth.
