June Is Men’s Health Month

June Is Men’s Health Month, image of a man

There has always been a discrepancy between the life expectancy of men and women. I always thought it had to do with men’s genetics and physiology. I think perhaps there is a different reason. When I ask my male patients to schedule, they often tell me that they need to ask their wives first.

When it comes to healthcare, although spouses may discuss findings with each other, I find it difficult to believe that they need each other’s permission to go to see their doctor.

People do have scheduling and financial concerns. Every one of us is busy. Those who do not schedule their visits are the ones who perhaps do not prioritize their health. As far as financial hesitations, most people have health or dental insurance covering most exams at 100%, so they pay nothing out of their pocket.

Having said this, I will confess that I am much more likely to delay my healthcare appointments than my wife…

Also, I am much better at scheduling appointments with my dog’s Vet than for myself. So why is that?

I believe that men feel the need to represent a strong persona and are less concerned about healthcare. Perhaps we prioritize our family more than we do ourselves. It’s possible that men fear finding something wrong with their health would result in them not being capable of providing for their family. So, in turn, they would prefer not to know. Some are just scared, and others believe that if they do not feel pain, then nothing is wrong. I look at myself and use some of these same excuses to justify why I am not good at scheduling appointments for myself.

The reality is that these are just excuses. Delaying healthcare could have deadly consequences such as heart attacks and strokes.

For many years now, there has been a link between gum disease and heart disease. Studies have shown that the initial damage to heart vessels is linked to a bacteria that is only found in the mouth. If gum disease goes unchecked, bacteria will get into the blood. Some travel to the heart leading to damage to the vessels that lead to blockage. Other times bacteria can sit in vessels leading to a formation of clots that can break off and travel into the heart, lungs, or brain. By the time there are symptoms, you could be sitting in an ambulance wondering what happened.

Modern medicine was not intended to be used as a crutch to keep you alive but instead should be used as a way to prevent you from ever needing major care.

So, where am I going with all this?

As a man, you are never too busy to schedule check-up. By taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your family. Those that seek regular care live longer and spend less time and money in the long run on their healthcare.

If you have not come in for a routine dental visit in a while, then this is the month to do it. So schedule your next appointment with us, and let’s keep your health in tip-top shape.
