3 Home Remedies For Toothaches, image of a woman holding her mouth in pain

Work has been stressful, traffic unusually bad, and you were looking forward to the weekend. There’s just one problem, you’ve suddenly developed a terrible toothache. How are you supposed to see a movie and eat popcorn now?

Toothaches can be a sign of several issues. Cavities, a cracked tooth, or a loose filling are only a few of the causes. If you’ve develop a toothache, however, one thing is clear, they can completely derail you plans. So until you have the opportunity to see a dentist, these three home remedies can provide needed relief to get through the next few days.

Salt Water Rinse

Salt water naturally brings down inflammation which can provide temporary pain relief. Add four to five teaspoons of salt to one cup of water, and swish around your mouth for a minute before spitting it out. Using ice cold water may help help to bring down swelling even further. Although the results are only temporary, a salt water rinse can be done as many times as necessary.

Clove Oil

Clove oil is a natural pain reliever due to its high concentration of eugenol, a anesthetic and antibacterial agent. Like salt water, eugenol reduces inflammation and has, according to a study published in the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, incredibly effective analgesic qualities. To use this remedy, dip a cotton ball in clove oil and gently apply to the affected tooth and gum.

Ice Pack or Cold Compress

Much like a bruise or injury outside the mouth, using ice can temporarily relieve pain and swelling. Freeze an ice pack and place it on the affected side of the mouth for up to thirty minutes to reduce swelling, and numb your mouth.

When to See An Emergency Dentist

Often times it can difficult to determine when an emergency dental visit is needed. As a general rule of thumb, pain should be a determining factor. If the pain you’re experiencing has become excruciating, then research whether your dentist has an emergency line, and attempt to schedule an appointment. If you’re suffering from a tooth that has been knocked loose, and the area is freely bleeding, nerve damage could be a factor, and you should see a dentist as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, home remedies only provide temporary relief and should not be used as a substitute for proper dental care. Toothaches are a symptom of a larger problem that needs to be addressed.
